In speech class in the fall semester of 2009, I learned how to speak in front of an audience.  The first part of the year, the instructor told the class to pick a speech topic you would like to talk about.   Mrs. Magabo explained the ethics part of the course and how to prepare for the speech.   When we I went in front of the classroom to deliver my speech I was nervous.  When I was waiting for the cue to start my presentation, I stood up there and took a few deep breaths.  I believe that this helped me regain my confidence.  I also believe that I was nervous because we were being recorded and the speech was going to be posted on youtube.com.   However, once I started talking I felt more relaxed.  I made good eye contact with the audience and did a good job presenting.

My first speech was on the informative speech.  An informative speech is when you are explaining to your class a certain topic.  The topic I decided t speak about was global warming.  In this presentation I talked about what global warming was, how it is affecting us, and ways we can control it.  This was a easy speech for me to deliver.
After the informative speeches we went right into on how to deliver out persuasive speech.  This would be more difficult because you want your audience to see your point of view on the topic.  I was even more nervous presenting this speech because I was not sure on if people would like my speech topic on why not to drink and drive.  After I sat back down, my group consisting of three of three other students said I did a good delivering my speech and I did a good job persuading.
What I learned from speech class this year that is speaking in front of an audience is not as bad as you would think.  For me I would focus on a group in the audience and pretend that I was just having a conversation with them.  CAS 100A will help me in my up coming classes because being a business major I hear that the classes coming up in the next two years, there is a lot of presentations you will have to present to the class.  Also this class helped me just talking in general to people.  I feel that this class also has prepared me for job interviews too.  I speak slower and more clearly.
A major part that contributes to success in this class is your daily participation and attendance.  When you are not in class you miss valuable lectures, and group meetings.  In our groups we all sat down together and went over each other speeches and told each other what we need to do to make it better or get your point across.  This was good because it helps both students learn public speaking.

Part 2 (100 points)
1.      What factors on your part as a student have helped you in achieving the learning objectives and any other development from the course (such as your own efforts given to the course, work ethics, dedication, diligence, determination personal goals, drive and enthusiasm, unavoidable, unexpected  circumstances)? Please, explain.
2.      What factors on the part of the instructor helped you in achieving the course objectives? (i.e., instructor’s teaching style, knowledge, professionalism, course materials; required tasks, communication style, attitude, etc.)
3.      What inner transformations, ethical and personal values, traits and personality development have you gained through the course of your learning in this class?
4.      If you are to describe your overall experience in this course, how will you describe your experience? Why?
5.      Comments/Suggestions
As a student, things that helped me achieve the learning in this course was coming to every class meeting, and participating.  The instructor did a great job in having her presentations ready for class.  In the presentations, there would be the requirements for class along with the ethical part.  As long as you showed up to class you knew what was expected of you and when everything was due.  Another big factor that makes you succeed in this class is a positive attitude.  If you go into any class with a bad attitude you won’t do well in it.  The saying ‘what you put in, is what you get out’ is a good way to describe this course.  If you did your work and tried the best you could, you will learn a lot from this class and instructor.
The instructor never cancelled class.  She is always there on time ready to teach us.  She knows her material very well and is willing to help students outside the classroom.   She is always sending emails, updating us on what is going on in class or if there is any changes in the class schedule.
In this class I can honestly say that I learned a lot.  I attended every class, and was ready to do something new in class.  I also believe that the group that I was in had a good influence on me.  We all had a positive attitude and were always helping each other out with things.  I am thankful that I had a great instructor as well as a good group.
The overall experience I have to say was great.  Out of the three semesters here at Penn State Hazleton, I believe that this class is one of my favorites because I am going to use the techniques and rules that I learned in this class in my everyday life.  This class also helps prepare you for a job.  When you go for a job interview you will come off as professional if you remember how to speak.
Even though this course general requirement, I believe that it is the most important one.  Other general education courses deal with history, art, and some science.  You can learn it and understand it but you are not going to use those courses in your major.  Public speaking will be used everyday, so I will rate this class as my favorite class in my college career.
